The entire performance was brilliant! Elvira is played by Olga Peretyatko - 'I Puritani' is her Met Opera debut with her husband Michele Mariotti as the conductor (how romantic is THAT?!) Lawrence Brownlee plays Arturo.... aye dios mio tha PIPES on these two!!! Brownlee hit that high F like no body's business and walked on of the stage when he was done all *snap snap...aaaand scene bitches!*
Their voices complimented each other in every single way. They had great chemistry and were just a delight to listen to.
Michele Pertusi played 'Elvira's uncle/father figure Giorgio who was so captivating in his delivery you'd long for him on stage. He has a great sense of privacy and presence when he is performing and makes you forget you're in a room with hundreds of other people watching an opera.
Ricardo (baritone) was played by Mariusz Kwiecien who was powerful and forceful vocally performing with every bit of rage you'd expect from a jealous broken hearted character like Ricardo. Unfortunately Mr Kwiecien was unable to return for the 2nd and 3rd act as he was ill and was replaced by Maksim Aniskin for the remainder of the show. Maksim is artist who's been slowly building up his resume and getting bigger parts in every play he has been in to date from Othello to Madam butterfly just to name a few. Maybe it was the nerves of having to jump in after such a whirlwind like Mariusz Kwiecien (who's expression of Ricardo is so grand and powerfull) but when Maxim took over in the 2nd act it was noticeably different....the energy and power seemed less and he seemed a bit stressed in his solos which was understandable. I can only imagine the pressure he felt jumping in mid play for a character like Ricardo. Maksim was however more comfortable in his duets with Michele (Giorgio) and by the 3rd act I was blissfully entertained again:)
What a night. Love Opera season! Massive shoutout to the entire production team for a fantastic job, this was beautiful from start to finish :)
